New York, NY —
The Ironman actress Gwyneth Paltrow received a $3 million dollar investment from Starkist Tuna to launch a new product. The ridiculously priced candles ($75) named “This Smells Like My Vagina” sold out in less than an hour. Paltrow developed the candle while making lunch consisting of light tuna spread on vegan gluten-free crackers with a friend when she blurted out, ‘Uhhh..this smells like my vagina!” This evolved into a strange, erotic, and unexpected scent. “With a funny, strange, erotic, and unexpected scent, this candle is made with recycled gym towels, decaying foliage bergamot, and sardine essence juxtaposed with bathwater and poppy seed to put us in mind of fantasy, seduction, and a sophisticated warmth,” the product’s description states.
Paltrow has a controversial history in peddling questionable wellness products, promoting body vibes stickers, which it claimed could “cure cancer with love’s energy,” as well as sex dust, coffee enemas, vagina powder, vaginal eggs, vaginal steamers, a Harvey Weinstein BDSM kit which included cock rings and a penis injection kit, and semen-love spray.
The company settled a lawsuit in 2018, paying out $10,145,000 over unscientific claims made about the semen-love spray. The wellness brand suggested the semen-spray could “prevent depression, prevent uterine prolapse, and cause pregnancy,” as the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The controversial wellness brand is coming back into the spotlight with the upcoming January 24 premiere of The Goop Lab on Netflix, which will examine “alternative health practices” and feature story time with Mr. Weinstein, psychic mediums, and orgasms, according to the trailer.
